Writing this column I remembered this text on page 11 of the December/January issue: “…the appeal with payroll is that it is not boring”. The truth of this statement is surely confirmed by the raft of changes currently challenging the profession, which include – to name just a few – real time information, workplace pension reforms, tax and NICs integration, PAYE pooling. All these are covered in this issue.
Comprehending and explaining statutory and workplace requirements and their implications, and implementing processes and procedures to fulfil or satisfy them, is intellectually stimulating and professionally challenging. Payroll professionals are being provided with opportunities to assert and increase influence in their workplace. And being a member of a Chartered institute must add weight and authority to their assertions and proposals, surely?
There are two items in this issue I wish to draw particularly to your attention albeit for very different reasons. On page 23 you’ll find mention of a worthy project started by Gillian Dale-Skey to explain payslips etc to school pupils. And on page 40 there is the first of a series of articles on accounting – a neglected aspect of payroll but one which I firmly believe is essential to grasp in order to communicate effectively with board directors such as the Finance director.
