
What will I learn?
The first year of the Foundation Degree in Payroll Management teaches the fundamental elements of payroll. It is a very technical year and therefore much of the assessment is done via examination at the end of each module.
Content
Following a timetable, each module should take approximately eight weeks. Students will have a module review day and tutorial per module.
Module 1- Objectives of the Payroll Department
This module introduces various aspects of employment that affect payroll administration, including issues relating to the employer and employee, the main functions for which payroll is responsible and the interaction with other departments.
Students will also be introduced to the financial requirements of input and output from the payroll function.
The analysis and understanding of the obligations of the payroll function when considering areas such as data processing and employment status.
Module 2- Assessment of Pay and Benefits
This module introduces the principle functions of the payroll department and the build up to gross process. Students will also be introduced to the payroll cycle and how information is collected to provide gross pay.
Module 3 - Deductions from Pay
This module looks at the calculations and complexities of deductions from pay including: income tax, national insurance and other statutory and voluntary deductions.
Module 4 – Absence Processing
Legislation requires employers to calculate and apply differing levels of payment and leave entitlement for statutory absence including sickness, maternity, paternity and adoption.
Module 5 – Working in a Team
This module looks at the communication and coordination within a team whilst examining team structure, roles of team members and the development of the individuals as team players.
