How to Become Excellent at Interviewing

CIPP course duration 1 day

Who is this course aimed at?

This is aimed at people who do recruitment as part or all of their role and for those who are accountable for ‘reducing the gamble’ in terms of recruiting individuals who need to be appropriate for the role and the organisation as well as eligible and suitable.

Course aims

On completion, delegates should be able to:

  • Understand how competency or behavioural based interview functions both in theory and in practice
  • Trade the ‘crystal ball’ for sound behavioural techniques
  • Understand how to frame questions that mean every minute of the interview is used effectively and make sure that time spent at the interview is used to maximum effect with the outcome being the evidence the interviewer needs to make a decision

Course content

  • The mechanics: - role spec, advertising, competency architecture
  • Structuring the interview: – interview planning checklist – an example
  • How does behavioural/competency-based interviewing work? Applying the technique and obtaining also ‘contrary evidence’ and using summarising exercises
  • How to get the most out of the interview
  • Types of interview questions
  • Common errors in questioning
  • The flip side - coaching the candidate for and during the interview
  • Reducing the ‘gamble’ – the ‘subliminals’ – what additional evidence is there?
  • Additional tests and tools – language competence, written work, psychometric tools – why use them?
