Effective Performance Management

Who is this course aimed at?

This course is aimed at line managers who want to review and improve their management skills.

What will I learn?

An essential ingredient in improving the performance of individuals is feedback. This training workshop will provide line managers with an opportunity to review their performance management skills, develop their confidence in dealing effectively with staff one to ones, help them deal with addressing under performance in a timely and effective manner, and identify gaps in the monitoring of staff performance and propose solutions.

Content

  • The management cycle: where does performance management sit?
  • Performance management: what is it? how does it work? what is the role of the line manager in it?
  • Manager issues and concerns: why do so many managers feel uncomfortable with face to face reviews, common pitfalls to avoid and benefits of effective performance management
  • Clarity and communication of objectives; using SMART objectives with your staff; the importance of both parties having a clear understanding of responsibilities and expected standards
  • Behavioural objectives and performance objectives – covering both elements within the review
  • Dealing with one to one meetings – preparation beforehand; practicalities of face to face meetings; handling staff reactions confidently
  • Giving feedback – ensuring all feedback is effective; giving negative and positive feedback in a constructive manner – essential guidelines for both; complimenting and giving constructive criticism
  • Monitoring as a line manager – people, results and processes; identifying gaps and proposing solutions
  • Personal action plans – identifying the way forward for the next one to one meeting

Course aims

On completion, delegates should be able to:

  • Understand the importance and benefits of effective performance management and how to apply it in their workplace, with their team
  • Feel confident and comfortable conducting a face to face performance review with a member of staff
  • Be able to highlight both positive and negative performance in an appropriate manner during a face to face review and handle staff reactions in a calm and controlled manner
