Essential Skills for Team Leaders

Who is this course aimed at?

This course is aimed at those who have no previous training, for both newly appointed or soon to be appointed team leaders or supervisors. It can also act as a refresher session for more experienced team leaders.

What will I learn on this course?

This course provides a solid foundation and understanding of the skills essential to the role of team leader. It aims to empower anyone in the role of team leader, supervisor or section leader and to give them a practical understanding of their role and responsibilities so that they can maintain and improve the effectiveness of their teams.

Course content

  • Understanding the team leader role in the work environment
  • What are your responsibilities? Key skills and qualities required – how do you compare?
  • Planning work effectively and organisational skills – time and self management; prioritising workload and delegating appropriately
  • Effective communication – how well do you communicate at all levels?
  • The importance and benefits of communication; regular briefings and meetings
  • Individual communication skills – ensuring open, two way communication with your team
  • Leading by example – essential leadership skills for the workplace
  • Motivation – getting the best out of individuals and the team; understanding what makes people tick and identifying how to motivate them at work
  • Understanding teams and effective teamwork – are you leading a team or a group?
  • What makes a successful team? Building team spirit and lifting morale
  • Recognising your key strengths and areas for development
  • Action plans – what will you do differently as a result of the programme?

Course aims

On completion, delegates should be able to:

  • Plan work more effectively, understand how to delegate to their team and prioritise workload
  • Develop more open lines of communication with their team, running effective briefings and maintaining a true open door approach
  • Identify different techniques for motivating their team members and appreciate the importance of treating people as individuals as well as part of a team
  • Understand how to build a positive team spirit through strong, pro active leadership skills
