The MSc in Business and Payroll Management is a very demanding but also very rewarding course. When starting out on the adventure of University and studying, it all looked to me like a huge mountain to climb and really far too much work. The MSc has shown me how much fun studying and research can be (yes, some people may call me mad) and has inspired me to continue developing, furthering my career and becoming more confident. Having completed my dissertation on Organisational Culture & Behaviour, I have discovered that there is so much more that can be researched and done to help employers and employees alike. As a result - I have applied for a PhD in Applied Psychology/Organisational Health and Wellbeing and hope that I can develop even further in this field. The MSc has opened doors for me I didn’t know existed and I am very grateful to Alison Ward and Elaine Gibson for their support and showing me what can be achieved, if you put your mind to it.

Saw this qualification as the next logical step to increase my knowledge of payroll and management within my chosen profession. The MSc has allowed me to develop strategic business techniques which I have used to improve my business acumen and operate on a strategic level within my firm. The rewards have certainly been a great benefit to me in the payroll arena. Over the three years on occasions it was quite stressful juggling study and work but once you find the balance that fits in with you honest it's worth it.

Having previously studied with the CIPP and achieved the Diploma in Payroll Management I saw the MSc in Business and Payroll Management as the obvious progression in my personal development and career progression. Although the studies did at times feel all too consuming, the support of fellow students and tutors ensured the challenging personal development was smooth. The financial, cultural and strategic skills obtained throughout the three years have been translated into strategic reporting and procedures that have been utilised by the business. Having achieved the recognised highest payroll qualification I have been rewarded with promotion to include the management of the UK and Irish payrolls.

I feel by achieving the MSC it has not only expanded my payroll knowledge but also that of the business, it can be stressful and challenging at times but very worthwhile. From a business point of view havng an employee who has the highest payroll qualification in their employment speak volumes and in my opinion well worth the investment.

My study at Derby University through CIPP in MSc Business and Payroll Management provided me with an exposure to a wide range of areas relevant to my professional background as a Senior Accounts and Payroll Implementation Consultant. Whilst, the study course was challenging, it was also an enjoyable experience, improving my professional skills and providing me with a broader perspective on different aspects of business and payroll at a higher level. During the study, I found the academic staff helpful and highly professional in their approach; and the material used relevant to the degree course, delivered in pleasant surroundings.

The MSc was a challenging and demanding course to undertake, but the end results far outweigh the challenges and demands. One week after graduating from the MSc, the Company that I worked for went into administration. This was unexpected and I was fortunate to be kept on by the Administrators until the Company finished trading in the March. I received a phone call from the Company who had provided the Payroll and HR System asking me if I wanted to meet with them to discuss the possibility of a job with them as a consultant. They had heard what had happened and having worked with me for the previous five years, known I had completed the MSc and felt this was an excellent skill/qualification to have and one that could be beneficial to the software provider. After meeting with them and discussing my situation, they offered me a position within the Company as a Consultant and I have been employed there ever since. I now implement the software, and train people on how to use it, and as I have the MSc this is mentioned to customers, when they ask the level of Payroll knowledge the company has. I feel that the MSc was an important factor in my search for a new role and I now do a job that is completely different to the Payroll Manager job I was doing before!

One of the biggest wins for me was that as a direct result of my studies I felt better equipped to make informed decisions through research, analysis and choice.  Once I qualified I personally felt a great sense of achievement, the whole experience was a lot of hard work but equally rewarding and fulfilling.

It is worth mentioning the CIPP's practical approach to study for busy working people.  Recommendations for study are best observed, make no mistake you have to do the work but if you need support you will find it at the CIPP.

I would recommend the MSc programme to people who wish to achieve more, develop and quantify their current skill set.
