PHASING OUT THE DEFAULT RETIREMENT AGE

20 October 2010

The government published a consultation detailing plans to phase out the Default Retirement Age (DRA) from April next year.  If proposals are agreed then the DRA will be abolished by October 2011, ending the forced retirement of thousands of employees.

It will still be possible though for individual employers to operate a compulsory retirement age, provided that they can objectively justify it.

The Policy team published a short survey to obtain member views on how this change will affect employers.  To view the formal response and results of the survey visit the consultation area of our website.
