The Employment Rights Bill has made a key step in its journey to Royal Assent and has returned to the House of Commons for consideration of the amendments proposed.
However, this doesn’t mean that the bill is close to the end, both the House of Commons and the House of Lords must agree on the final version of the bill. This risks the bill being transferred between the two until an agreement can be reached. The House of Commons does have the power to override the House of Lords by The Parliament Act.
With Labour’s majority in the Commons it is unlikely that they will fail to secure the amendments’ acceptance or rejection that they desire. However, there are feelings that the landscape of the Employment Rights Bill has changed following the recent government reshuffle.
The policy team will be keeping an eye on its progress and what makes it into the final bill that received Royal Assent.
