CIPP founder wins international contribution award

09 July 2014

CIPP founder, Gordon Cresswell, has today been awarded the Special Contribution Award by the Canadian Payroll Association for the work he has achieved in raising the profile of the payroll industry in the United Kingdom and internationally.

Gordon was invited to a ceremony in Toronto, Canada to receive the award which is a representation of an Inukshuk, an Inuit symbol of guidance and good luck. In presenting the award Patrick Culhane, CEO of the Canadian Payroll Association said - "Throughout the years Gordon has fostered the development of professional payroll organisations throughout the world, first in the UK by establishing the national body, CIPP and then in Ireland, South Africa and more recently India."

Lindsay Melvin, CEO of the CIPP, commented: “Without Gordon’s expertise and vision the CIPP wouldn’t be here today. It also wouldn’t have the strong bonds that it does with our international counterparts including the Canadian Payroll Association, who have also given much guidance on the strategy of our own organisation.

“For this and the un-summerisable amount he has contributed to the payroll industry over the years, we would like to pass on our heartfelt congratulations on this well deserved award.”

Gordon commented -"I was amazed at the award and especially proud as it came from Canadian movement which has always been at the vanguard of professionalism within the payroll environment. Pay is the reason people go to work and the payroll movement strives for promptness and accuracy whilst keeping employers compliant and free from penalties. I am proud to have played a part in its development".

Gordon was a founder member of APSA the first payroll membership and representation organisation in the UK, which serviced the public sector. Later he co-founded the organisation, which is now the CIPP (Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals) for the private sector, which, some years later, made him an Honorary Fellow for his services to the payroll profession.
