The HMRC app is marking its tenth anniversary this year, having evolved from a simple tax calculator into one of HMRC's most widely used digital services.
New campaign encourages pre-payday checks
To coincide with the anniversary, HMRC has launched the latest phase of its "You're On It" campaign, encouraging people to check their pay and tax information through the app before payday.
The app can help users better understand their earnings, tax deductions and overall financial position before their salary even arrives. By checking information in advance, users can identify any issues with their tax code, pay details or personal information more quickly and take action where necessary.
Helping people stay on top of their finances
HMRC says the app is designed to support customers through life's everyday changes, whether they are starting a new role, managing their finances or simply trying to keep on top of day-to-day administration.
The app enables users to:
- view and download their National Insurance number
- check their tax code
- use the pay calculator to estimate take-home pay
- view employment history
- access their annual tax summary and PAYE income summary
- see income information before their payslip arrives
- claim a tax refund directly through the app where they have overpaid tax
- check their State Pension forecast
- claim and manage Child Benefit.
The app also allows users to make Self Assessment payments, track correspondence from HMRC and obtain estimates of future tax liabilities.
More than 7.6 million people used the app during 2025/26, including 2.8 million new users, generating over 155 million visits throughout the year. HMRC says the app is now used by millions of taxpayers to access tax information and manage their finances digitally.
A recent HMRC analysis found that 5.6 million taxpayers checked their pay through the app almost 100 million times during the last year, equivalent to an average of 18 checks per user. According to HMRC, around one in seven PAYE taxpayers have now used the app to check their pay before it reaches their bank account, helping them better understand and manage their finances.
Part of HMRC's wider digital transformation
The growing popularity of the app reflects HMRC's wider ambition to become a more digital-first organisation. According to HMRC's latest Transformation Roadmap update, around 80% of customer interactions now take place through automated or digital self-service channels, compared with approximately 65% five years ago.
HMRC has also confirmed plans to move further away from paper communications. From summer 2027, more than 100 personal tax letters will be available digitally for the first time, with the department aiming to reduce postal correspondence by up to 75% by 2028/29.
With more than 7.6 million users and an expanding range of services, the HMRC app's tenth anniversary represents a significant milestone in HMRC's digital transformation journey and its ambition to make managing tax simpler, quicker and more accessible for customers.
