HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is seeking views on how to improve its data collection from third parties in order to improve its services in a new consultation: Better use of new and improved third party data.
The consultation, forming part for the tax administration and framework review, seeks to expand the scope of data already collected by Schedule 23 of the Finance Act 2011:
- financial account information – including bank and building society interest (BBSI) and other interest
- card sales – data shared by providers of card acquiring services, such as merchant acquirers
Part of the proposed changes include the obligation for suppliers of the above data to collect a National Insurance number (NINO) from users that would be provided with data sets to improve matching. Company Registration Numbers (CRN) and VAT Registration Numbers (VRN) will be required for businesses.
This consultation is open until 21 May 2025.
