NATIONAL INSURANCE CARDS WILL NO LONGER BE ISSUED

23 September 2010

As part of the government’s spending review to reduce expenditure National Insurance (NI) cards (RD3) will no longer be used to inform people of their NI number.  From this month a simple letter will be used instead.

The Spending Challenge website which was introduced back in July has generated over 45,000 suggestions.  Members of the public were invited to review and rate the ideas received in order to help identify the most promising ones. To distribute NI numbers to people with a letter rather than a plastic card was one of these ideas and it will be implemented as policy by the government.
