National Minimum Wage Investigations

15 August 2014

HMRC have confirmed details of their investigations into Minimum Wage (NMW) failures during 2013/14, which provides a helpful picture of the most common problem areas.

In 2013/14 HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) conducted 1,455 NMW investigations. Of those investigated just under half (47%) of businesses had NMW errors.

We are grateful to the Pinsent Masons tax team for this report. They point out that employers can inadvertently fail to comply with the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rules in a number of ways. Typical risky areas can be unpaid time, such as training or travelling time or internships, or deductions from wages.
