In response to the Department of Business and Trade (DBT) announcing a new consultation to seek views on the implementation of adding new rights for those on a zero-hour contract, we conducted a quick poll to find out what you thought.

One such right considered is the right to payment for shifts cancelled, curtailed or moved at short notice. We asked you to give us your views on whether you think the payments should be:

  • a percentage of what the worker would have earned from working the shift or the relevant hours
  • a percentage of what the worker would have earned from working the shift or the relevant hours at the National Living/Minimum Wage rate
  • something else.

The results are in…

Answer

              Percentage

a percentage of what the worker would have earned from working

the shift or the relevant hours

63.40%

a percentage of what the worker would have earned from working

the shift or the relevant hours at the National Living/Minimum Wage rate

27.32%

something else

9.28%

The majority thought that the payment should be a percentage of what the workers would have earned from working the shift or relevant hours, with the fewest votes submitted for something else. The specified results under ‘something else’ ranged from people suggesting that people with these types of contracts are aware that shifts may be cancelled and so there should be no payment, whereas many stated workers should be paid the full amount.
