FOUNDATION DEGREE IN PENSIONS ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT ACCREDITED BY LEEDS METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY

01 September 2010

Enrolments are now open for the Foundation Degree in Pensions Administration and Management starting in Autumn 2010.

The Foundation Degree in Pensions Administration and Management is a distance learning qualification developed by the IPP under the auspices of Leeds City College and accredited by Leeds Metropolitan University. which can be awarded after a minimum of two years study. Assessment will be by both tutor marked assignment and examination.

The study material will be delivered online as the student progresses and assignments and / or examinations are completed. Training days and tutorials will accompany the study modules and will be available at various sites across the UK, as well as being made available via webinars, webcasts and DVD as appropriate.

Year One of the new qualification is designed to address the needs of employees wanting to gain a good understanding of the workings of the LGPS and provides a good introduction for relatively inexperienced administrators or those who have not been exposed to the breadth of the work of a pension section. In this way it performs a similar function to the Foundation in Local Government Pension Administration. Year One will be self-contained and students may wish to defer progressing to Year Two, which contains the more advanced and strategic concepts and legislation, some of which are currently dealt with in the Diploma in Local Government Pension Management, until they have gained more experience.

The topics proposed to be covered by the qualification include:

Year one:

  • LGPS - Roles and Responsibilities
  • Accruing and improving benefits
  • Leaving the scheme before retirement
  • Retirement - voluntary and involuntary
  • Death benefits

Year two:

  • Pensions payroll
  • Pensions administration systems
  • Overriding legislation - including HMRC, disclosure
  • The bigger picture - including governance, consultations, benchmarking, etc

Years one and two also incorporate personal development modules.
