As part of the a currently open call for evidence: Parental leave and pay review, the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) want to know how the parental leave system stacks up against its aims and objectives.

The key areas have been laid out in our quick poll and here are the results. The percentages are the proportion of respondents who feel that the parental leave and pay system does support that aim:

Objective

% responded

Provide enough time off work with enough pay to support mothers health

15%

Help parents to stay in work and advance in their careers, including reducing the gender pay gap

17.5%

Provide enough pay and leave for parents to help give the best start in life by supporting the healthy development of young children

12.5%

Provide parents the flexibility to make balanced childcare choices, including co-parenting

30%

None

61%

There was a mixture of responses agreeing with some combination of the aims, the most popular answer, regarding flexibility, may reflect the payroll profession’s greater awareness of the shared parental leave system. The rest of the responses being generally low and a majority instead stating that they don’t feel the system meets any of these stated aims.

The CIPP will be using these results to feedback to government as part of our call for evidence response. Thank you for getting involved and having your say.
