15 April 2025

The list of Recognised Overseas Pensions Schemes (ROPS) notifications has been updated.

This news item will look slightly different from our usually fortnightly update. This is due to some changes to the requirements to be a ROPS established in the European Economic Area (EEA). These changes came into play from 6 April 2025.

The changes mean the conditions of Overseas Pension Schemes (OPS) and ROPS established in the EEA, will be aligned with OPS and ROPS established in the rest of the world, meaning:

  • OPS established in the EEA will be required to be regulated by a regulator of pension schemes in that country
  • ROPS established in the EEA must be established in a country or territory with which the UK has a double taxation agreement providing for the exchange of information, or a Tax Information Exchange Agreement.

From 6 April 2026, scheme administrators of registered pension schemes must be UK resident. Further information can be found here.

Please note you’ll need to ensure the scheme you’re transferring to on or after that date meets the new requirements.

The list shows schemes that have told HMRC they meet the conditions to be a ROPS and have asked to be included on the list.

There have been 26 schemes added and nine removed.

HMRC list the updates, as follows.

An updated list of ROPS notifications is published on the first and 15th day of each month. If this date falls on a weekend or UK public holiday the list will be published on the next working day. Sometimes the list is updated at short notice to temporarily remove schemes while reviews are carried out, for example, where fraudulent activity is suspected.

The requirements to be a ROPS changed from 6 April 2017 - find out about the changes for ROPS requirements.

Further changes came in the Budget 2024 removing the tax-free transfer exemption on some overseas pensions.
