HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has released a special edition of their Agent Update focusing entirely on Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD)

This update is designed to help agents and employers prepare for the upcoming changes, particularly as the first group of taxpayers enters MTD for the 2026-2027 tax year.

The special edition highlights the deadlines, including the requirement for affected taxpayers to submit their first quarterly update by 7 August 2026, and provides practical guidance on signing clients up, choosing compatible software, and managing authorisations through the Agent Services Account. HMRC notes that most taxpayers are expected to use an agent for MTD, and this update includes links to toolkits, videos and step-by-step support.

This special Agent Update sits alongside wider guidance already published by HMRC and previously reported by us here at the CIPP, reinforcing the message that preparation ahead of the first quarterly update is essential.
