Prime minster, Rishi Sunak, has today (22 May 2024) announced that the general election will be called for 4 July 2024 and the sitting government is likely to be dissolved next week.
It is therefore expected that no further fiscal statements will be forthcoming before the election. As we will enter a period of pre-election period of sensitivity, government departments will need to exercise caution when making announcements that could influence voters. It would therefore be expected that no new policies or large legislative changes would be brought forward.
