The new Labour government has committed to looking at the confusion of employment status with a view to simplify the process for all involved. This can be seen in their “Plan to Make Work Pay”.

The previous Conservative government committed to legislate and clarify employment status following recommendations from the Taylor Review, however, this was decided against following the pandemic.

In a new Research Briefing the government has laid out a comprehensive overview of the reviews done over the past couple of decades and set out plans for reforming the process including a potential single worker status.

With the King’s Speech taking place this week, it could be one of the areas where draft legislation is put forward. It is likely that it’s implementation would require further consultation to avoid any unforeseen consequences in the employment and labour market.
