The Government has announced an expansion of its Youth Guarantee initiative with 300,000 new work experience and training placements to give every young person the chance to earn or learn and reverse the growing number of those not in education, employment or training (NEET).
This expansion follows Alan Milburn’s interim review into youth unemployment, which warned that the ‘first rung’ of the career ladder has thinned for many young people. As entry-level roles decline, it seems employers are increasingly struggling to find candidates with the right experience.
For these employers facing ongoing recruitment challenges, particularly in sectors such as health and social care and hospitality, this announcement could offer a direct route to develop talent aligned to their business needs by engaging in programmes like Sector-based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs) and work placements.
Following the previous announcements of the major youth employment drive with the Jobs Guarantee, Youth Jobs Grants and the Apprenticeship incentives, the Government is giving employers more opportunities to gain job-ready candidates and take an active role in shaping the future workforce.
Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) Secretary, Pat McFadden, said:
“The evidence is clear, give young people real work experience and the chances of them building a lasting career increase dramatically. That’s why we are creating 300,000 new placements, backed by some of Britain’s biggest employers, to give young people the skills, confidence and connections they need to get on.”
For businesses, the evidence in favour of engagement is strong. Around 40% of SWAP participants move into sustained employment within six months, earning an average salary of £1,400 per month. With budgets for employers becoming tighter, engaging in these youth employment initiatives can provide a cost-effective way to access, train and retain talent.
