As part of the kings speech, we received details of the Draft Equality (Race and Disability) Bill. This Bill stands to make significant changes to how payroll delivers reporting in larger organisations.

We are now used to the process of gender pay gap reporting for larger employers, but we are potentially about to see a similar process for disability and ethnicity reporting.

New rights are to be introduced to make equal pay based on these characteristics a lawful right. This will enable individuals to more easily bring claims of unlawful discrimination.

For payroll teams, these reporting requirements could bring significant challenges. Gender is a required field for RTI, and therefore pay gap reporting can be conducted using the payroll records alone, if systems allow. Ethnicity and disability, however, are not commonly held within payroll software.
