In a move towards the UK government's aim of making work pay, it has been announced today that the remit of the Low Pay Commission (LPC) has been overhauled. Ensuring that the independent body considers the actual cost of living when making minimum wage recommendations to the government in the future.
What is the genuine living wage?
The government's “commitment to a genuine living wage” includes:
- taking the first step to deliver on the promise of a genuine living wage for working people
- overhauling the Low Pay Commission’s remit to factor in the cost of living when recommending minimum wage rates
- removing discriminatory age bands so that all adults can benefit as work gets underway on the plan to Make Work Pay.
The LPC has been asked to report their recommendation for the next rate change by the end of October 2024 for the April 2025 increase. Showing the timeliness have remained the same for the new remit.
