As part of our ongoing working relationship with HMRC, they have asked us to share this information with our members.

Let your employees know how to check their tax if their pay isn’t what they expected, and how to update their details if their tax code is wrong by telling them about the HMRC app.

The easiest way for employees to check the tax they are paying is by viewing their personal tax records online, either through the HMRC app or online services. Employees will also be able to see the reason why their tax code has changed.

One of the main reasons employees experience unexpected changes in the tax they pay is if the information HMRC has is wrong. Employees can quickly and easily check the details we have and update them if there have been changes. Please encourage employees to use the HMRC app or go online if they’ve:

  • Started a new job
  • Have more than one job
  • Had a change in their employment income
  • Had a change in their company benefit (such as a company car, or medical insurance)
  • Had a change in their pension income.

Employees can access their personal tax information via the HMRC app by following these simple instructions:

  • Download the HMRC app from their app store or visit GOV.UK/HMRC/app
  • If they have an HMRC online account already, they can sign straight in using their ID and password. If not, they can prove their identity by answering some questions or providing photo ID
  • Once in the app, employees can go to the ‘Pay As You Earn (PAYE)’ section and select ‘understand your tax code’. If their tax code has changed, this section will explain the reason for the change.

The added benefit of using the HMRC app is that employees can also opt into receiving paperless letters by going to settings, select ‘paperless settings’ and adding their email address. HMRC will send an email to let them know when there’s a letter to view in their online account.

Once set up, they can choose to sign in using face recognition, a fingerprint scan, or by creating a six-digit PIN – so they don’t need to remember their password.

Employees that can’t use online services or need extra support can get help from HMRC  or can register a friend or relative to help with their tax.
