Quick Poll results: do you know about “List 3”?

30 August 2022

In our last Quick Poll, we asked: Do you know what "list 3" is?

The results are in and 81% of respondents were not aware of “List 3”, leaving 19% who are aware of what it is.

For those who have not encountered this list before, here is a brief run down of what it is and how it can be useful to you.

Maybe we have been a bit sneaky, as the full name of “List 3” is the approved professional organisations and learned societies list.

The list provides the names of all professional organisations that Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has approved for tax relief. The relief can be claimed for approved bodies if being a member of that body is relevant to your job role.

Tax relief cannot be claimed if membership fees or subscriptions are:

  • not paid yourself (for example if your employer has paid for them)
  • paid to professional organisations that are not approved by HMRC.

HMRC regularly updated the list to ensure it is up to date with new bodies, bodies that changes names or merge and bodies that dissolve. This can be particularly important for those in a payroll services capacity to inform workers of the relief they can claim.

It is also important to remind our members that the CIPP is listed on “List 3” as “Payroll Professionals Chartered Institute of”. Therefore, if the criteria are met, tax relief can be claimed on your CIPP membership.
