The Scottish government has published an independent report, Minimum Income Guarantee: report - a roadmap to dignity for all, produced by the Minimum Income Guarantee Expert Group.
The report explores a roadmap approach to a how such income protections could work.
The plan is split into three distinct steps:
- Building the Guarantee: 2026-31
- Including pilots and improving services to reduce household costs
- Creating a Fairer Scotland: 2031-36
- Including expanding the pilot to a time-limited payment
- Realising our Collective Ambition: beyond 2036
- Rolling out a full Minimum Income Guarantee
Read the full report for more detail on the roadmap, such plans would come at significant cost to the Scottish government but would help those unable to work, such as disability or short term sickness, to continue to provide for themselves with dignity.
