System requirements to use HMRC's Basic PAYE Tools
28 April 2023
Basic PAYE Tools (BPT) is free payroll software from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for businesses with fewer than 10 employees. There are specific system requirements in order for BPT to run on a device.
An Intel compatible CPU is needed, which supports the SSE2 instruction set, such as a Pentium 4 or newer.
The installer will not work on processors that do not support SSE2, including:
-
Intel processors prior to Pentium 4
-
AMD processors prior to Athlon 64, including all Socket A-based processors
-
some Celeron processors
Currently Mac OS 13 (Ventura) is not compatible. The following operating systems are supported:
-
Windows 10 and 11
-
macOS version 11 ‘Big Sur’ and 12 ‘Monterey’
-
Ubuntu Linux version 20.04 LTS and 21.10
However, only 64-bit Intel/AMD compatible versions of these operating systems are supported.
The following browsers can be used if assistive software support is needed:
-
Microsoft Edge (Windows only)
-
Google Chrome
-
Mozilla Firefox
-
Apple Safari (macOS only).
More information on how to download, install and run BPT can be found here.
