Each year the Administrative Burdens Advisory Board (ABAB) completes a survey asking how HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are supporting small businesses and alleviating the administration they impose.
Read the full report for some in depth data on what is concerning small businesses today, but for a high-level overview, here are some key findings:
- Making Tax Digital awareness is increasing, however the mandatory nature is disliked and businesses see little benefit to themselves
- HMRC communication and engagement is still seen as poor and response times poor. Letters are also seen as not being written in plain English, sometimes with harsh or threatening tones
- Guidance is generally helpful, however there are concerns that AI is being used to find answers without fact checking the information
- 57% of respondents feel that the administrative burden has worsened.
