The checking tool for agent registration is now live. Check if and when you need to register for an Agent Services Account (ASA) to interact with HMRC on behalf of your clients as a tax adviser.

If your business interacts with HMRC about someone else’s tax affairs and get paid for it, you may be required to register if you do not already have one.

To use this tool, you’ll need to know if your business:

  • provides paid tax services

  • contacts HMRC on behalf of clients

  • already has an agent services account

  • has previously registered for a Self-Assessment or Corporation Tax agent code.

Payroll only service providers will need to register for an ASA from 18 November 2026.

To register for an ASA, businesses must be supervised by an Anti-Money Laundering Supervisor. Registration opens on the 17 May 2026. Final date to be registered is the 18 February 2027.

Registration requirements can differ and are being introduced in stages. The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) will continue to provide regular updates.
