Welsh government’s final budget for 2020-21 approved

04 March 2020

The final Welsh budget, initially presented in draft back in December 2019, has been approved by Welsh Assembly Members.

There have been only minor amendments to the draft budget, and the Welsh Rates of Income Tax (WRIT) have been confirmed. A debate was held, and as a result of this, the Welsh Rate Resolution was made, which means that the Welsh Rates of Income Tax for 2020-21 are as follows:

  • The proposed Welsh rate for the basic rate of income tax is 10p
  • The proposed Welsh rate for the higher rate of income tax is 10p
  • The proposed Welsh rate for the additional rate of income tax is 10p

43 Assembly Members voted in favour of the Welsh Rate Resolution, with six abstentions and one vote against it.

The BBC reported on the day at Senedd, and  confirmed that there is no difference in income tax that is payable for Welsh taxpayers, in comparison with the rest of the UK.

The budget in its entirety was approved with 27 voting for it, one abstention and 22 votes against.
