New report on unfair redundancies for new mothers

17 November 2017

Maternity Action launched their report on unfair redundancies for new mothers at an event in Parliament this week.

According to Maternity Action they were “pleased to have speakers and statements of support from across the major parties, showing the growing recognition of the need to better protect pregnant women and new mothers in the workplace.”

The report is calling on the Government to act on its commitment to review redundancy protection for women during pregnancy, maternity leave and their return to work.

In advance of the General Election last June, Maternity Action produced a manifesto which outlined their top ten policy calls. This included asking for:

  • a legal extension to redundancy protection for pregnant women and new mothers,

  • revised guidance for employers conducting health and safety risk assessments for pregnant women and new mothers, better protection for those in precarious forms of employment

  • the removal of employment tribunal fees

  • a right to breastfeed at work

  • an increase to the flat rate of parental pay by 2020
