Flexible working requests can be made to change when, where or how an employee works. Flexible working can benefit both employees and employers.

Employees may request flexible working to help with a work life balance or to improve their health and wellbeing. Employers can help to attract and retain staff, keep their employees happy and motivates, and to improve diversity and inclusivity.

From 6 April 2024:

  • employees can now make a flexible working request from the first day of employment
  • two requests can be made within a year
  • the employer must reach a decision and communicate that back to the employee within two months of the request being received.

Acas have updated their guidance pages on flexible working to support employees and employers. The pages provide the following templates:

  • flexible working policy for employers
  • request letter for employees
  • acknowledgement letter for employers
  • outcome letter for employers.
