Apprenticeship training for non-levy paying employers
09 January 2018
The Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) is awarding contracts to hundreds of organisations to provide apprenticeship training to non-levy paying employers; those who do not pay the apprenticeship levy because they have an annual pay bill of less than £3million.
According to the Department for Education’s press release there was strong interest in the procurement exercise, with over 1,000 bids accepted, and each one going through a rigorous evaluation process.
Hundreds of training organisations across the country are being awarded contracts to provide apprenticeship training for learners and small businesses. This will ensure all businesses have a real choice of high quality apprenticeship training provision, no matter where they are in the country or what sector they operate in. It will also mean that more people of all ages and backgrounds will have the opportunity to get into skilled employment.
Employers looking to find an apprenticeship provider can do so through find apprenticeship training, which will be updated in early January.
Key points to note:
- Contracts will run between January 2018 and April 2019. During this period, non-levy paying employers can contract directly with these providers (all of whom are also on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers) to provide their apprenticeship training. Employers looking to find an apprenticeship provider can do so through find apprenticeship training, which will be updated from early January
- Initial awards totalling £485m have been made, with successful providers able to bid for more funding over the contract period if there is sufficient demand from employers
- The government recognise that some employers might be disappointed that their current or preferred provider has not been successful in their bid. There are still a wide range of providers for them to choose from, and this procurement will not affect training for any apprentices who started their apprenticeships before 31 December 2017
There are over 200 employer-designed apprenticeship standards now approved and generous funding arrangements meaning that non-levy paying employers get at least 90% of the costs of training and assessment covered by government.
