07 February 2024

From 5-9 February, we’re celebrating National Apprenticeship Week to recognise the massive contribution made by apprentices across the country. The theme for 2024 is ‘skills for life’, to highlight how apprenticeships can help people build the skills to prepare them for rewarding and lifelong careers, but also how they can assist employers in developing knowledgeable and skilled workforces. There are currently two payroll apprenticeships available and they are the:

·       Level 3: Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship

·       Level 5: Payroll Assistant Manager Apprenticeship.

It's important to remember there are national minimum wage (NMW) considerations for organisations hiring apprentices. Namely, that apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate if they’re either:

·       under the age of 19

·       19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship.

This means that if someone is under the age of 19 throughout the duration of their apprenticeship, they can be paid the apprentice rate, regardless of what year of the apprenticeship they’re taking. It also means that an apprentice can be paid the apprentice rate for the first year of their apprenticeship, regardless of what age they are. And finally, it means that someone aged 19 or above who has completed the first year of their apprenticeship must be paid at the appropriate NMW or national living wage rate.
