HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) published its issue 110 Agent Update for tax agents and advisers. The update provides information on technical updates and reminders, HMRC agent services, voluntary National Insurance contributions (NI), payment protection insurance (PPI) claims.

Some of the key highlights are:

  • taxpayers given to 5 April 2025 for voluntary NI contributions - this means men born after 5 April 1951, or women born after 5 April 1953, have more time to check their records, decide whether to pay voluntary contributions to make up for gaps in their NI record and can afford to do so if they choose
  • helpful hints for completing PPI (R40) claims – applying for a repayment of tax on savings interest for individuals who do not complete a self-assessment tax return
  • influencing your clients to do their tax returns
  • let HMRC know what you think of the manuals – HMRC would like feedback on the manuals so that the best possible information is available to support your clients.

Other areas also covered in the issue are:

  • alcohol duty new rates and reliefs — get ready for the changes by 1 August 2023
  • research and development (R&D) tax relief reform — updates
  • economic crime (anti-money laundering) levy — HMRC online service now open for registrations and returns
  • overlap relief — preparing for the new tax year basis
  • update on UK implementation of global tax reform
  • EU Exit.

Keep an eye out for our reporting on the next edition due on 16 August 2023.
